On the National Register of Historic Places, this forest cottage looked like it had been built by elves before we began a major remodel to update it for a young family. The peeled-branch stairway to the third floor was only 18 inches wide, and the exposed log construction meant there was no space to hide wiring or plumbing, making it almost unmodernizeable. We inserted steel into the log beams to provide structural stability, hid wires and plumbing in sneaky places, brightened up the interior with judicious use of white paint, and puzzled a newly bright kitchen into the logs, giving this beautiful structure (and its elves) a new life for the next century.
