This one-story 1930s lake cottage faced an uncertain future: demolition to build a larger house, or the addition of a second floor, which would have required gutting the house to add required supports. We proposed a third option: jacking it up ten feet and building a new first floor below, preserving its charming period details and capturing wonderful views of Lake Washington. The kitchen became a primary bath, the tiny dining room became a walk-in closet and the living room became the primary bedroom. The new downstairs reflects its vintage style but functions as a contemporary home, with open spaces, modern conveniences and multiple sets of French doors to bring the outdoors in.
