A juxtaposition of the traditional and the modern, this home sits on Queen Anne Hill overlooking Seattle and Elliott Bay. The client couple began the project with dramatically different visions: she favored a traditional European farmhouse, while he preferred a modern, industrial aesthetic. The resulting gable-roofed “farmhouses” face the traditional street, while a 20' steel-and-glass wall opens the house to the view. We fused the opposed perspectives by applying a rigorous design sensibility and careful use of materials, such as reclaimed fir ceilings and custom metalwork, in a way that feels organic and dramatic. The project received a National Certificate of Recognition from the American Institute of Steel Construction for its imaginative structural expression.
